Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain is a hot topic at the moment. Not only is the cost of planning applications on the increase there is also a requirement to ensure that Biodiversity Net Gain is considered when developing land, either on a commercial scale or for a domestic client wanting to build an extension.

That’s why Matt and Rachael held a presentation at the studio last week to discuss this important, but little understood, new requirement for all planning applications.

The presentation explained the fundamentals of the new legislation which comes into being in January. There will be a requirement for all developments to leave the environment in a measurably better state than it was before - by a minimum of a 10% increase.

Rachael explained the various ways of achieving this - creating new habitats, managing woodlands and waterways and introducing native species into the landscape. Matt also gave an insight into three of our projects where increasing the biodiversity net gain had been quite challenging but ultimately resulted in huge gains for the developers in question thanks to the experience and expertise of both Rachael and Matt.

The event was again well attended and Rachael has been asked by several organisations to present her talk at future events.

If you would like Matt or Rachael to come to your organisation to present on this, or any other topic within the field of sustainable architecture or landscape design, do get in touch - email us at info@austindw.co.uk.
